Class Meeting Options (adapted and modified from “Team Time” resources, Middle School) Class meetings can include any of the following activities.Ideally, the meetings should be varied for different types of discussion.The meetings are intended to facilitate team development, provide opportunities to get to know students better, develop character, and build a sense of community and respect among students and staff. Morning Message Theme Discussion – A brief impromptu discussion following on the theme of the morning message. Planner quotes discussion – In each student’s planner are “Life and Learning” quotes.These quotes can provide the impetus for a brief discussion. Team Building Activities– These activities will help build a team feeling within your class and your team. They may include adventure based activities, problem solving activities or activities where students share appreciation. CharacterBuildingActivities – Activities that focus on traits such as respect, honesty, responsibility, friendship, etc. Discussion Activities on School, Community or World Issues – When an issue arises that is important to discuss, either related to the school, community or the world, this is a time to trigger that discussion. Study Skill Activities– Activities that focus on study skills, organization, or test taking skills. Celebrate Birthdays or Special Events – This can be a time to celebrate birthdays or other special events within your classroom. Peer Leading – This can be a time for 8th graders to show leadership by helping to lead 6th and 7th grade class meetings. Community Service Projects – Classes can use this time to organize and plan community service projects.Make sure if you are planning one of these that you let the office and other teams know. Silent “Seat” Ball – This is a fun silent activity that can be paired with reviewing concepts or as a means of studying non-verbal communication. Game Days – Games of various types may be played during this time.For the most part, there should be some purpose to the game related to team building. Suggestion Boxes – Students can come up with ideas of what to discuss in class meetings with a suggestion box in the classroom. Bullying or Speak Out booklets- These can be used to generate discusion on bullying gossip and peer pressure.
